The Fashion Act

We need your voice.
#ActonFashion

We demand an end to fashion's race to the bottom.

Apparel and footwear are responsible for an enormous and under acknowledged part of global greenhouse gas emissions, between 4-8.6%. (By comparison, the entire United States accounts for 11%). It is an industry pumping out an endless flow of mostly plastic based products taking no responsibility for how it is made or the waste it creates. The fashion sector is not just an enormous polluter, it is also a leading industry in the use of exploited, forced and child labor.

It has such an enormous impact on our world, because it is one of the least regulated industries. This has led to a global race to the bottom, where the companies that have the least regard for the environment and for people (mostyle women) have the greatest competitive edge. The industry has come up so far with empty promises, while the industry’s impact only increases. At the current pace fashion alone is set to account for over a quarter of the world’s carbon budget. This needs to stop. No more blah, blah, we need action. The Fashion Act S.4746 (Hoylman) / A.4333 (Kelles) is a groundbreaking piece of legislation that will shift the industry away from this race to the bottom by requiring mandatory social and environmental due diligence. It will further stop the fashion industry’s addiction to fossil fuels by requiring companies operate in line with the Paris Agreement.

Toxic chemical effluents from textile mills pour into a river in Guangzhou, China.
